The First One Hundred

No. 19

LIGNORAE Pen No. 19 is a hand-turned fountain pen made from Golden Amboyna Burl, a highly prized wood known for its warm golden colour and remarkable natural figure. Its surface reveals intricate curls, clustered markings and shifting grain patterns created by the tree’s unusual burl growth. Every section displays a different arrangement of colour and texture, making this pen completely individual. Carefully shaped and polished to bring out the depth of the wood, Pen No. 19 combines natural richness with the refined proportions of a LIGNORAE writing instrument.

Pen No. 19 showcases the extraordinary character of Golden Amboyna Burl. Unlike conventional timber with a more predictable grain, burl wood develops through irregular growth, creating complex patterns of curls, eyes, knots and interlocking fibres. In this piece, these natural structures appear across a warm golden background, with subtle variations that give the surface depth and movement.

Object notes

Material, surface and intention.

The wood changes gently as the pen is turned in the hand: some areas appear calm and finely figured, while others reveal denser clusters and more dramatic burl patterning. No two sections are identical, and no other pen can reproduce the exact arrangement found here.

Hand-turned, carefully refined and polished in the LIGNORAE workshop, Pen No. 19 was created to preserve the expressive character of the material while offering the balance, comfort and reliability expected from a fine fountain pen. It is a one-of-a-kind writing instrument for anyone who appreciates rare natural materials and the quiet beauty of imperfection.
