The First One Hundred

Basic - 001

The First One Hundred No. 001 is handcrafted from Romanian walnut (Juglans regia) and finished using the traditional Japanese yakisugi technique. Fire deepens the grain, darkens the surface and reveals a quiet contrast between texture and form, creating a writing instrument that feels both contemporary and timeless.

Object notes

Material, surface and intention.

The First One Hundred No. 001 began as a carefully selected piece of Romanian walnut (Juglans regia), a wood valued for centuries for its strength, warmth and distinctive grain.

Its surface was transformed using yakisugi, a traditional Japanese charring technique in which fire becomes part of the making process rather than merely a tool. The controlled carbonisation darkens the wood, enhances its natural structure and creates subtle variations that cannot be repeated exactly. No two pieces emerge from the process in precisely the same way.

The result is a writing instrument defined by contrast: warmth and darkness, organic material and deliberate form, tradition and contemporary craftsmanship. Beneath the charred surface remains the character of the walnut itself, visible through shifting textures and reflections that change with the light and with use.

As part of The First One Hundred, this piece belongs to the founding edition of the atelier. It represents an early chapter in the development of LIGNORAE and carries its place within the first one hundred individually registered writing instruments created in Munich.

Each piece is handcrafted, individually inspected and permanently recorded in the LIGNORAE registry.
